WIA — In San Francisco

Happy Wednesday! Hump day for all of you that are working (and for those who aren’t.. like me.. you probably don’t even know what day it is 😉 )

There is no way I wanted to miss WIAW by Jenn – so I’ve compiled some of my eats while I’ve been out here in Cali!!

So – going away on vacation for me – does not meet giving up my healthy habits.  I try to keep myself eating healthy – even while away and even if I have to eat out for many of my meals.

So – how do I stay healthy?!  Well, the first thing that I did when we got to San Fran… was hit a up a local little market to pick up some essentials.

I knew that our room had a fridge.. and that there was a microwave available for use – so I could have Organic Instant Oats w/ a sliced banana and the protein powder that I brought from home for breakfast…

I had this oat mixture (here with Strawberries that I picked up at the Farmer’s Market..) for most breakfasts.. while Justin hit up Starbucks for bagels.

I also picked up some carrots – and some goldfish for snacking.  Additionally, I had the chocolate cherry snacks, some (luna, clif, bora) bars, and a supply of apples as well.

Here are a few of my eats from when we have been out!

Steel Cut Oats made with water.. topped with fresh fruit (and I added Sun Warrior 😉 )

A turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread with lettuce and tomato from Working Girl’s Cafe

AMAZING Hummus Platter – Sun-dried Tomato Hummus, Kalamata Olive Hummus, and Traditional Hummus with cucumbers and flat bread for dipping:

Plain Grilled Veggies with Brown Rice – and a Balsamic Glaze Dipping Sauce on the side.. (Both of the above mentioned dishes were from Daily Grill )

Self-Serve Frozen Yogurt from Ice Bee … on multiple occasions..

They may look the same.. but that is ONLY because it tasted SO good, I got the same thing both times! 🙂

This is .. of course.. no where near ALL that I have eaten while in San Fran.. but I am not one to picture all of my meals!!

I do induldge as well.. don’t you worry! I just want to make sure that I keep myself energized and feeling like myself through the whole trip!

Oooh Hey!! Is it Sunday ALREADY?! This weekend was a little too short if you ask me!

Yesterday was a whirlwind.. I was running around from place to place all day.. and plan to do nothing but relax today (well almost nothing.. Grocery Store and Boot Camp.. then nothing)

I have some fabulous news for ya!

Look at those pearly whites!  They are CAVITY FREE! First time in years. Seriously.. it may sound gross.. but I am kind of OCD when it comes to cleaning my teeth. I brush atleast three times every day (I have a toothbrush and toothpaste I use daily at work) and I floss.. every single day. So – please don’t be grossed out when you hear that I get cavities often. I cherish my teeth and try my darnedst to keep them in healthy!

I also made out pretty well at the mall yesterday – Lord and Taylor was having a Friends and Family sale and EVERYTHING in the store was 25% off. This could have resulted in major damage.. but I walked away with these shoes:

I had originally planned on getting foundation – but then the lady at the counter offered both my mother and I free make-over. Who turns down a free make over.  We had a lovely little Saturday morning getting our make up done. While I wanted to buy everything on my face (especialy the eye-shadow set that was used.. but I wasn’t about to spend 45$ on shadows), I also walked away with new mascara.

It is pretty amazing. It has a vibrating brush. Enough said.

I also took care of my beastly looking eyebrows while at the mall :).

See, I ususally have trouble holding off to get them done professinally. I have very dark eye  brows.. and fair skin.  My eyebrows are also pretty thick.. so it is OBVIOUSLY when they are not kept up.  I usually just pluck.. but that gets annoying,,, so every once in a while, I force myself to let them grow long enough to have someone else do it professionally.

I’ve left the world of waxing though – and now use threading.

I love threading.  It can provide a cleaner, more precise line then waxing does – and it doesn’t lift a layer of your skin.  The threader somehow uses the thread to pull out the hairs in a twisty sort of way.  It is rather quick – and does not leave you with red rings around your eyebrows.

I have found that my hair grows back slower and finer when I get them threaded in comparison to either waxing or plucking 🙂

When I returned to the condo.. I fell asleep for a couple of hours. (I really think I might have lyme’s disease or something.. my energy is still depleted and I am just not the ball of energy I normally am). There was no work out today. Just too tired. I slept until it was time for Justin and I to go to dinner at Saltwater Grille.

I was not impressed.. at all.. with my dinner. I got cod – and I felt like it was soaked in butter. I could barely even eat any of it.  It came with white rice (which can be very problimatic to my stomach.. so I didn’t eat that either).. yet it said no where on the menu that it would be coming with white rice.  It also did not say there would be NO vegetable with the dish. And it was not cheap.

Justin – on the other hand.. enjoyed his New York strip steak and fries.

To make up for my lack-luster dinner.. a stop at Stew’s for some frozen yogurt was absolutley necessary!

It was too good.. I gobbled it down before I had a chance to capture it in pictures..

On a silly side note – I came home to this:

Bright pink duct tape on each of the steps in our building.  We have an elderly neighbor who recently fell down some stairs.. and I guess this was the plan to help her see them more clearly.

Justin noted it would be helpful if he ever came home really drunk 🙂

How do you take care of your brows?  Plucking; waxing, threading.. nothing at all?! How about your teeth?!

Are your prone to cavities, like me? And do you feel (like I do) that it makes people think you don’t take care of your teeth?!

Lesson Learned…

Good morning!!  I am feeling kind of BLAH this morning.. and have been feeling this way since yesterday.

I know exactly why too.  And I have learned a MAJOR lesson.  As you know – after long runs, I tend to have a stomach that does not really want good.  So – yesterday I had a banana and PB before my run .. and then could not stomach my oats once I got home.

Well, stomach.. you aren’t really going to be able to make decisions like that anymore.. because not eating my breakfast when I got home REALLY messed up my day – my energy levels.. etc.

Running long distances takes a lot of energy – a lot of fuel.  So it only makes logical sense, that one should refuel once the run is completed.. within a short amount of time after the run is complete.. even if your tummy tells you NO.

Since I listened to my stomach.. I didn’t eat breakfast until 11:30am.. meaning I didn’t eat lunch until 3:30 pm.. meaning my meals were just WAY off!  I felt okay.. until we were on the way to see Hangover 2 last night ( more on that shortly).. and I seriously just wanted sleep. I had eaten my “lunch” and a few snacks .. and knew I needed more.. but I was just feeling so awful.  I am fairly certain that this is a result of improper post run fueling.

When we returned home last night at about 10:00 – I had a headache, my body felt exhausted… and it just was NOT cool.  I slept straight through the night.. and am still not feeling quite normal.

Rest day today?! YOU KNOW IT!

So – since I am building up my miles – I have learned a valuable lesson about fueling and refueling.. and I can guarantee you I will NEVER make that mistake again…


Rewinding to yesterday.. funny, but scary story. On the way up from the pool, Justin and I saw some fire engines, police cars.. crowds of people.. huddling around the building across from ours.  We walked over the take a look and saw..

Mm. Yeah. That car.. was into the building. Jumped the curb, through the bushes.. BAM… into the building.

Fortunately, the woman who was driving only broke her nose and she is going to be okay.  We are assuming she his the gas instead of the break.. had the car in drive instead of reverse.. who knows?

I am quite used to having cars hit buildings.  In the town where I grew up, there is a large elderly community and having cars go into Dunkin Donuts, Food Stands, Conviennce Stores, Banks.. was not irregularity. It is super scary through, when you think about it.  There have been instances where a person ended up being hit… and their lives changed forever.

Now – I have no quarrels with the elderly driving – as long as they are still with it – but I do kind of agree with implementing some sort of testing for drivers over a certain age.  The driving abilities of a person in their 30s or 40s.. probably differs GREATLY than those of someone in their 80s or 90s..

After watching the fire department pull the car out of the bushes.. I had my late lunch:

Turkey Sandwich, Cucumber Slices, & Cottage cheese with apples and peanut butter..

And Justin and I eventually left for the movies..


The movie was definitely funny.. had the same storyline as the original Hangover. but to my surprise, I stayed up through the entire thing and was laughing the whole way through.  It didn’t seem too long.. or dragged out.  Which I loved. I often find myself waiting for movies to end..

Onto the BEST part of the night. Mmhmm.. Thats right, my FIRST ever trip to PINKBERRY!

I think I am in love.  I decided to go with original fro yo – (I plan on being a frequent customer.. so I will be sure to try out everything else!)  Laura suggested giving watermelon a whirl.. and I love next time I am totally on that.  For tonight,I was in the mood for a classic combo.

My toppings were blueberries, strawberries, and dark chocolate crispy things! Justin had original.. just with chocolate chips. LOTS of chocolate chips!

It was packed… even though the temps were a little low.  The store itself was smaller then I expected.. having only 4 small tables, but Justin and I were able to grab one and enjoy.

Pinkberry, I am SO glad I have met you. We are going to get along VERY well this summer (especially since you are on my way home from work..)

Today, I’ve had my oat bran – – with strawberries and PB …

And Justin and I are off to the store in a little bit.  And for the rest of the day.. well, I am doing NOTHING. Probably some blog prep.. some sleeping.. trying to get back to being myself again.

Sorry bootcamp – you just aren’t happening today!
