Lesson Learned…

Good morning!!  I am feeling kind of BLAH this morning.. and have been feeling this way since yesterday.

I know exactly why too.  And I have learned a MAJOR lesson.  As you know – after long runs, I tend to have a stomach that does not really want good.  So – yesterday I had a banana and PB before my run .. and then could not stomach my oats once I got home.

Well, stomach.. you aren’t really going to be able to make decisions like that anymore.. because not eating my breakfast when I got home REALLY messed up my day – my energy levels.. etc.

Running long distances takes a lot of energy – a lot of fuel.  So it only makes logical sense, that one should refuel once the run is completed.. within a short amount of time after the run is complete.. even if your tummy tells you NO.

Since I listened to my stomach.. I didn’t eat breakfast until 11:30am.. meaning I didn’t eat lunch until 3:30 pm.. meaning my meals were just WAY off!  I felt okay.. until we were on the way to see Hangover 2 last night ( more on that shortly).. and I seriously just wanted sleep. I had eaten my “lunch” and a few snacks .. and knew I needed more.. but I was just feeling so awful.  I am fairly certain that this is a result of improper post run fueling.

When we returned home last night at about 10:00 – I had a headache, my body felt exhausted… and it just was NOT cool.  I slept straight through the night.. and am still not feeling quite normal.

Rest day today?! YOU KNOW IT!

So – since I am building up my miles – I have learned a valuable lesson about fueling and refueling.. and I can guarantee you I will NEVER make that mistake again…

Rewinding to yesterday.. funny, but scary story. On the way up from the pool, Justin and I saw some fire engines, police cars.. crowds of people.. huddling around the building across from ours.  We walked over the take a look and saw..

Mm. Yeah. That car.. was into the building. Jumped the curb, through the bushes.. BAM… into the building.

Fortunately, the woman who was driving only broke her nose and she is going to be okay.  We are assuming she his the gas instead of the break.. had the car in drive instead of reverse.. who knows?

I am quite used to having cars hit buildings.  In the town where I grew up, there is a large elderly community and having cars go into Dunkin Donuts, Food Stands, Conviennce Stores, Banks.. was not irregularity. It is super scary through, when you think about it.  There have been instances where a person ended up being hit… and their lives changed forever.

Now – I have no quarrels with the elderly driving – as long as they are still with it – but I do kind of agree with implementing some sort of testing for drivers over a certain age.  The driving abilities of a person in their 30s or 40s.. probably differs GREATLY than those of someone in their 80s or 90s..

After watching the fire department pull the car out of the bushes.. I had my late lunch:

Turkey Sandwich, Cucumber Slices, & Cottage cheese with apples and peanut butter..

And Justin and I eventually left for the movies..

The movie was definitely funny.. had the same storyline as the original Hangover. but to my surprise, I stayed up through the entire thing and was laughing the whole way through.  It didn’t seem too long.. or dragged out.  Which I loved. I often find myself waiting for movies to end..

Onto the BEST part of the night. Mmhmm.. Thats right, my FIRST ever trip to PINKBERRY!

I think I am in love.  I decided to go with original fro yo – (I plan on being a frequent customer.. so I will be sure to try out everything else!)  Laura suggested giving watermelon a whirl.. and I love next time I am totally on that.  For tonight,I was in the mood for a classic combo.

My toppings were blueberries, strawberries, and dark chocolate crispy things! Justin had original.. just with chocolate chips. LOTS of chocolate chips!

It was packed… even though the temps were a little low.  The store itself was smaller then I expected.. having only 4 small tables, but Justin and I were able to grab one and enjoy.

Pinkberry, I am SO glad I have met you. We are going to get along VERY well this summer (especially since you are on my way home from work..)

Today, I’ve had my oat bran – – with strawberries and PB …

And Justin and I are off to the store in a little bit.  And for the rest of the day.. well, I am doing NOTHING. Probably some blog prep.. some sleeping.. trying to get back to being myself again.

Sorry bootcamp – you just aren’t happening today!

I NEVER turn down a SURVEY!

HOLY MOLY! Is it seriously June 1st?  Did y’all remember to say “Rabbit, Rabbit” when you woke up this morning… if so.. you’ll have good luck this month!

Jam packed for the rest of the month!!

I am a little obbsessed with surveys so when I Char tagged me in a survey, you better believe I am ALL OVER IT!!!

Name 3 things sitting next to you right now

  • This BOOK! Sorry.. Bitter is the New Black, but it is time to move over. I may come back to you sometime soon – but I just cannot get into you.

Buut.. Mr. Patterson can always give me a good read.  Intellectual value of the Patterson Cross series.. none. Entertainment.. OH YES! Love Alex Cross 🙂

  • WATER… YUM. Summer definitely means better hydration for me.. because I actually FEEL thirsty!

  • The CD and manual to my Garmin that Justin bought me – that I have yet to install on my computer.  This is something I really need to do.. ASAP. Espcially since I love me some numbas and stats 😉

Name 2 foods you can’t live without

  • Bananas. DUH! I mean.. if you read my blog.. you know I have it .. in some form.. every single day. Either by it lonesome.. with some PB, in a dessert, or most commonly.. in my daily bowl of OATS!!!

  • Dark Chocolate. FOR SURE.  So – you know how I ate too many of these on Sunday after the cookout…

Well, I seriously thought I ate so much.. and it made my stomach hurt a little beyond my comfort level.. that I would be dark chocolated out for a while. UM! NO SUCH LUCK. I was back on the chocolate train yesterday. Oh, well.

Name 2 things you can’t live without

  •  I can’t live without LISTS.  I love making lists.. Grocery Store Lists are my favorite!  I also make To-Do lists.. Blog Post Lists.. Workout Lists.. If it can be made into a list.. I probably do it.

  • Wow – looks like I have a lot i common with Char! I totally agree with her on the computer thing! Just like she said.. I don’t NEED it to survive.. but I rely on it for so many things.  I mean.. if I had nothing but the computer.. I could still communicate with all of my family in friend, blog, lesson plan.. you know 😉

Name 2 people you can’t live without

  • JUSTIN.We have grown so close after moving in with each other.. and despite all of my quirks.. and demands.. Justin gets me. And I get him too!

  • And I am going to have to kinda piggy back off of Char’s repsonse.. naming the other person.. as PEOPLE.. aka my family.. Mom, Dad, and Michael. Wouldn’t be who I am today without them.. and truly treasure my relationship with them!

Name 1 thing you did today

Well, this is quite a great story actually.  Today.. I lost my mind for a little bit during math while making place value holders.  I needed to get a staple on the middle black lines…

And I I took a really stupid approach to doing it.  Long story short.. I ended up puttin each end of ONE staple.. into both oy my pointer fingers.

All I wanted to do was swear up a storm.  But with a bunch of kids watching me.. this clearly wasn’t possible.  To prevent anything from slipping.. I held my breath. I guess holding my breath made me cry (that is what I am blaming the tears on anyway)…

My kids looked quite confused.. since I went from a happy go lucky teacher.. to a breath holding.. tear falling face.  All I had to do was turn my fingers around to show them the blood oozing out.. and then they got the picture.

Excuse my old wrinkly hands...

If you have NOT yet put a staple in your fingers.. I highly reccomend AVOIDING it..

Name 2 things you learned from the healthy blogging community

  • I have learned that it is okay to be myself. That there is NO shame in the blogging world.. and that every reader is accepting for who I am.. what I do.. .what I have been through.. and the silly mistakes I make.. be it stapling my fingers.. or silly grammar mistake.
  • I am finally able to LISTEN to my body. And I have the blogging community to thank for helping me to reach that point. Reading your posts.. your comments.. help me to identify the needs of my body.. give it rest.. proper nutrion.. water.. variety. Everything.

So – there is my little survey.  Once again.. a big old shout out to CHAR for tagging me in the survey.  Hope you learned a little something about me here.. and I am hoping the two lovely ladies that I tag.. will also complete the survey so I can learn more about them as well 🙂

1) Alexis @ Pumped for Pumpkin

2) Jenny @ Food, Fitness & Health

Fun Through the Years

Good Morning my peanut-butter cups! Hope the weather in your neck of the woods is supposed to be as beautiful as it is here!

It is good to know that I am not alone in enjoying VOLUMINOUS oats every single day.. and how the increased volume of the food.. makes us all feel better (even though there is pretty much the same ingredients in both!)

I am glad you are all diggin’ the back workout too!  I am actually educating myself more on the moves I do every day when I am looking to link it up! So it is an educational experience for all!

Fun. We all love to have it. I mean.. life would be pretty dull if we didn’t have any fun in our lives.  But.. what exactly is fun?

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, fun can be defines as

  1. What provides amusement or enjoyment
  2. A mood for finding or making amusement

Pretty simple.  But fun is different for every person.  What I consider fun – Justin may not consider fun (i.e. BLOGGING DURING MY FREE TIME). What I find fun now – might have been something I dreaded 20 years ago (i.e., visiting places of history). OMG. Am I really old enough to be able to refer to doing something 20 years ago. WOW. I am having a moment.

Okay. I have regrouped.  So – this notion of fun – and how it is so dynamic.. has made me reminisce to all of the FUN I have had in my life.. and how my perception of fun has changed over the years.

When I was just a baby.. I did not partake in usually fun activities.. like sucking a thumb or a binky. Nope. I ATE THE HEARTH. Yup. that thing that is right below the fire place.  That is what I chewed on. That is what I found fun!

Now.. imagine that baby EATING the hearth. That's me.

I also got a kick out of bottles and swing-sets. I was easy to please.

As I became of school age, I kinda ditched the hearth. I probably still loved the way it tasted.. but feared what others would think of me. Now, I spent time chilling in a cosy coupe, riding big wheels, or marble painting.

Now – we are in later elementary school..and clearly toys still dominate my world.  Polly pocket, cabbage patch dolls, Barbie. DOLLS were the jam, if you asked me.  My favorite names for my dolls were Melinda and Clarissa. Why.. I do not know. I think my friend liked those names..and I thought she was cool…

I also developed quite a fancy for Full House and Home Improvement. No – these are not toys. But yes, I had fun watching these shows with my momma. AND TGIF! Boy Meets World, Family Matters.. good times!

In Middle School toys weren’t quite as cool anymore. But, I was totally into soccer and basketball – staying busy.

It was also fun to walk around the mall for hours with a group of people.. doing nothing. Just walking.. and maybe spending the $20 that our parents gave us in the food court, arcade, or candy store.  Man.. I thought I was pretty slammin when I was able to get dropped off at the mall and walk around ALONE!

This mall has a pretty fancy food court.. wouldn't you agree?!

When I first started high school, my fun was all about my sports. I was a dedicated athlete. Now though – my idea of fun was being cool. Trying to fit in- do what the cool kids did.  I didn’t go to the pubic high school in my town – so it was a whole new ball game with different people – different places.

Enter: High School Cliques

Fun meant – drinking and not getting caught. Having massive sleepovers with all of my friends – and just being plain silly!

During my senior year of high school and freshman year of college, fun kind of disappeared.  Sadly – I lost sight of who I was and how important I was.  My idea of “fun” was staying in my bedroom – or dorm room.. night after night.. zoning out to TV shows like The OC, The Biggest Loser, and reruns of Friends and Seinfield. Not how the typical 18 year old would have fun.

As I rounded out my college career – fun made some appearances. In the form of partying – spring breaks, etc.  Fun also meant working out (too much) and over extending myself (hey, I thought it was fun).

Common ways to have fun at parties included: cards, beer pong, flip cup, quarters, and catchphrase.

I still had my geeky side – as Jeopardy would make a nightly appearance in my apartment..and two of my roommates and I had a running score sheet!

Post Graduation – fun has changed. I know it has been three years since I have graduated.. but I have developed a strong sense of FUN in that amount of time.

To me, fun is:

  • Laughing with friends

  • Spending quality time with my family

  • Movie nights at home with Justin
  • Exercising to feel good (and nothing else)
  • Spending time in nature

  • A good glass of wine
  • Hitting up a Yankee or Ranger game

  • Game nights
  • Playing in the kitchen
So tell me.. what is YOUR idea of fun!?  Different then mine? Its possible! Different from 10 years ago.. likely! (But, I won’t lie.. I kind of feel like finding  a BIG WHEELS..and going for a ride!)
Enjoy your Tuesday!!!
